The National Museum in Lviv

The Museum was founded in 1905 by the Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky who is an outstanding figure of the Ukrainian history. Not only was Sheptytsky one of outstanding ecumenists in the world who sought for unification of the Christian churches, but also he was a great patron of the Ukrainian art and book-printing. In the Museum you will see a unique collection of Ukrainian icon painting of the 14-17th centuries. Old manuscripts, sculpture, painting, etching and folk arts will attract your attention.

It is one of the oldest museums in Ukraine. It has a great exposition of the Old World and middle Ages. The museum gives a new treatment of Kievan Rus and Galicia-Volyn principality history. Some monuments and collections of the museum make up the World Heritage: handwritten “Khrystynopilsky Apostle” (the 12th century), the Order of Andrey Pervozvanny, and the materials reflecting the lifeline of Chopin. At the end of the 19th c. the necessity of forming a historical museum in Lviv became imminent. A historian and collector Aleksander Czoiowski became the bearer of this idea and put it into practice. Being the director of a small building of ancient acts registry, he accumulated there municipal and guild relics. That was the beginning of the future historical museum; it was informed about in a special Testimonial of the 22nd of December, 1892. In May, 1908 on the initiative of A.

Arsenal Museum

It is the only museum of weapons ion Ukraine. The collection of “Winged hussars” (the 16th century) is one of the richest in Europe. Arsenal exhibits a great collection of old cold steel, fire-arms and cannons made in famous workshops in 32 countries of the world. Arsenal was built in 1555, but almost completely destroyed by fire in 1571. The building, in which the museun is now, was built in 1574 - 1575. Weapons are not only displayed but used to be made and repaired in Arsenal. Exhibition of ancient weapons from more than 30 countries around the world, including Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and America are displayed in Arsenal. The exhibition is based on chronological order, they are also categorized by type and weapons origin.

The Lviv Art Gallery (called the Lviv Picture Gallery till the fourth of February 1998) is the biggest artistic museum of Ukraine where unique works of painting, sculpture, graphic, decorative-applied art of West and East European countries from the Middle Ages to modernity are collected. The total number of exhibits of the collection is over fifty thousand. At the beginning of 1907 the collection of West European art by I. Yakovych, Ukrainian sugar magnate was bought by means of town council. Among the most precious are collections of European art, Lviv sculpture and portrait and also icons. Among the exhibits are works of mysterious Lviv sculptor Johan Pinsel who became a European sensation at the beginning of the 20th century. In the gallery you can also see rare works of Polish and Austrian artists. But the pride of a constant exposition is the works of famous masters and among them are those by Rubens, de la Turet, Goya, A. Mengs, Ya. Mateiko. Lviv Art Gallery is also a big scientific and educational center, which hosts conferences and internships for art experts and restorers. The Gallery has been taking part in organizing international exhibitions in Ukraine, Poland, the USA, Franc and Austria for many years.

Rusalka Dnistrova

The "Rusalka Dnistrova" Museum and the monument to Markiyan Shash-kevych (D. Krvavych and M. Posikira, the sculptors, V. Dubinina and M. Fedyk, the architects) were opened on the 15th of September, 1990. Markiyan Shashkevych (1811 -1843) was a famous poet, writer, interpreter. He was the inspirer of the first book in Ukraine, written in popular language and in Ukrainian alphabet - "Rusalka Dnistrova" ("Mermaid of Dnister"). The exhibition of the "Rusalka Dnistrova" museum - is placed in the bell-tower of the Church .of the Holy Spirit which is the architectural relic of the 18th c.

The Pharmacy Museum

We are at the entrance of the Pharmacy Museum located at the corner of Stauropegiyska and Drukarska Streets. This building was constructed in the 17th century. On the facade of the building you can see two bas-reliefs. They depict Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine, and his daughter Hygiene, the Greek goddess of health. The museum is located in the building where 250 years ago, the first pharmacy in Lviv pharmacy appeared. You’ll get to know the history of pharmaceutics, which was always one of the leading spheres in the economy of Galicia had a leading positioning the world for centuries. Here you can peep in most secretive corners of old mazes and visit the study of medieval alchemist.

The Museum of Ethnography and Crafts

The museum features folk craft. The collections of Kyiv and Poltava carpets, icons and church wooden fretwork of the 17-19th centuries attract visitors’ attention. Here you can also see a unique collection of Western European clocks of the 18-19th centuries. Museum of Ethnography and Crafts  is a rich memorial treasure of traditional culture of Ukrainian folk art, it includes samples of decorative arts of many nations around the world.
Museum dates back the last quarter of XIX century, period of two major museum centers in Ukraine establishment - the Municipal Industrial Museum and the Museum of Science after Shevchenko. Both museums have played a significant role in the collection, preservation and promotion of folk and decorative, and ethnographic art.

Folk Architecture and Life Style Museum - "Shevchenko’s Grove"

In the north–eastern part of Lviv,in the picturesque Shevchenko's Grove, covering 59 hectars, found its location an interesting museum, the Museum of Folk Architecture and Rural Life. The exposition of the Museum was inaugurated for visitors in 1972. The task of the museum is to collect, study and widely present to view the most typical features of rural architecture of the Western Ukraine. It is called upon to give a comprehensive idea of the life and traditions of various strata of the Ukrainian population from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. It is the open-air museum of Ukrainian architecture, folklore festivals are often held and there is frequently the sound of Ukrainian folk songs emanating from within.

The Solomiya Krushelnytska Musical Memorial Museum

The history of Lviv is closely connected with the names of outstanding cultural workers: composers, musicians, singers. A famous Ukrainian opera singer Solomiya Krushel'nyts'ka (1873-1952) takes proper place among these names. Her lyric-dramatic soprano of unmatched beauty was the voice of three octaves range and the unique phenomenon in the history of opera art. Her creative destiny let her appear in different countries of the world, sing on the most prestigious stages. She was called "unforgettable Aida", "the only in the world Gioconda", "the ideal Brunhild", "the charming Cio-Cio San".

The Museum of History of Galicia Medicine named after Maryan Panchyshyn

Opened in the premises of Ukrainian Medical Society in 3, U. Karmelyuk Street, telephone 76-97-98. Is opened from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday are days off). The museum amounts to about 5 thousands exhibits. These are the materials on the history of Lviv Medical University, medical instruments and wares; M. Panchyshyn memorial room can be seen. In "Lvivshchyna" sector two estates and a church are already prepared for exhibiting.\

Lychakivsky Cemetery

Historical and architectural reserves whose importance goes far beyond Lviv and Ukraine. This cemetery is the museum of memorial plastic arts and is the pantheon of the Ukrainian, Polish, Austrian cultures. Outstanding men of art, scientists, composers and participants of military action from the 20th century are buried there.
